“There are opportunities in tech,” Mombasa Youth Urged

Youth in Mombasa County have been asked to leverage on the opportunities that have come with the Covid-19 pandemic despite the impact it had, as many lost their employment.

Speaking during the launch of Pwani Innovation Week, the third edition, on Friday, Head of Swahili Pot Administration and Human Resources, Mrs. Zuhura Sheri said, they are aiming to create vast opportunities for learning, and providing a forum for innovators to interact and promote a culture of innovation in the region.

“This is an annual event that will enable innovators and startups to showcase their innovations and address challenges that they face. It will promote public-private sector partnership that will improve trade, economic resilience and push people to take responsibility to solve societal problems.” Said Mrs. Sheri.

The Swahili Pot Hub administration head also added that the event will allow for meaningful collaborations that will impact and strengthen the business and technology ecosystem.

“Our intention is to highlight innovations and promote effective support in the region and champion for policy recommendations to develop the coastal economy.” Said Mrs. Sheri.

County Chief Officer of ICT, County Government of Mombasa, Mr. Anwar Ahmed said the county government will help push the main agenda of the event so as to make innovation favorable.

“We as the county government of Mombasa are in full support of the main agenda and we shall push for policies that will make innovation favorable. We shall also provide solutions that cut across all sectors of the economy.” Said Mr. Ahmed.

CEO of Kenya National Chambers of Commerce and Industry Mombasa chapter, Mr. James Kitawi who was also present said the chamber will seek to find local solutions to solve local challenges.

Mr. Sammy Njoroge of Liquid Intelligent Technologies encouraged youth to participate in innovation forums as the field has endless opportunities.

“I urge the youth to be committed in this journey of innovation so as to survive this Covid era.” Said Mr. Njoroge.

The Pwani Innovation Week 2022 will be a seven-day event showcasing innovation, entrepreneurship, and talent. Some of the activities present include; hackathons, networking, exhibitions, training book camps, presentations, discussions, women in tech, kids expo, and Pwani got talent.

Other partners include, Konza Technopolis, Mozilla Fellow, and Close the Gap.
